Genital warts took center stage in the celebrity gossip columns when Michael Douglas crassly joked about getting throat cancer from his soon to be ex-wife's genital warts. Needless to say this careless remark has left no choice to the beautiful but emotionally fragile Catherine Zeta-Jones but to seek a divorce.

The truth is genital warts is not that bad, even if it is classified as a sexually transmitted disease. You can get warts on any part of your body through skin to skin contact. Warts a bit of a mystery because some people just get them even without skin transfer from other people. The only reason people seek genital warts treatment with such interest is because it could get unsightly, plus your future or current partners may not want you.

Where We Get Warts
Warts are caused by a kind of human papilloma virus or HPV from more than 100 kinds of HPV that create different kinds of warts that can pop up from other parts of the body. Many people experience warts on their hands or feet that transfer quickly from person to person. Some of these warts are thought to cause cancer.

The kind of HPV that causes genital warts can also grow on other soft tissues of the body such as the mouth, such as the case of Michael Douglas which is very unusual. How To Find a Wart
A wart looks like a wart, no matter on what part of the body it grows. But sometimes, warts are flat and flesh colored so they just look like embossed freckles. They also grow in clusters as one wart will infect surrounding skin, which makes flat warts look even more like freckles.

Occasionally people will also get warts that are three dimensional, the wart grows like bubbling brown or black cauliflowers on the skin. A wart is painless, occasionally itchy, but benign. Warts and Cancer
It is not really confirmed that warts cause cancer, but people with cancer do have poor immune systems because they are sick so they are likely to get infections more readily. A wart can be mistaken for skin cancer since both are a blemish on the skin that grows, but these are two different medical conditions.

Pregnant women who have genital warts need to consult their caregivers. While it is rare that warts will be passed on the babies, it can cause discomfort and bleeding during delivery. For worst cases, a cesarean section rather than natural birth can be planned to avoid complications with possible heavy bleeding.

Since warts are caused by a virus, treatment for warts is just like treatment for other viruses like colds. Most treatments will deal with the symptoms rather than the source then rely on the body's immune system to cope with the rest. There is no actual treatment for a virus and the best way to remove warts is just to simply have it cut off and apply medicines to prevent infection. This often leaves an unsightly scar if not done correctly.

Cutting out warts is best done by a skilled dermatologist or other health professional with a sterile and very sharp tool. Another alternative would be to burn the wart with an acid, usually salicylic acid that can be purchased at drugstores.
